Greetings Scouts,
We are preparing for the Klondike and got our wish with lots of snow this weekend. This is your opportunity to not only “Do your good turn daily” but to be good citizen. So, help your parents, neighbors, and town by getting out your shovel and clearing paths. You, as good scouts, know how to dress for the weather and know the signs of hypothermia. Keep warm by being active and helping neighbors remove snow, shovel sidewalks, clear storm drains and dig out fire hydrants. Stay safe, help others (at all times) and do your good turn. Mr. Duggan, Scoutmaster

Greetings Scouts,
Klondike Derby The Klonike Derby Polar Bear Challenge 2022 is coming up and this will be an exciting opportunity to test your fire building, lashing, orienteering, first aid, totn’chip, and of course increase your scout spirit by attending this exciting event. Our Troop has a long standing tradition of participating and doing our best. This year the Klondike will be held at TL Storer which is great but will present a logistics challenge since its an hour and half away. While I welcome winter camping, the notion of leaving late Friday and getting into a tent site deep into TL Storer (and we know the grounds), would be challenging in the dark, with snow/ice and late night. So given that information, we will have a new plan getting ready and leaving early on Saturday morning and returning mid afternoon Sunday. There is a lot of planning for SPL Lucien, ASPL’ Cameron and Charlie, to organize the troop, plan and prepare our troop, be prepared with equipment and all that goes into the Klondike. This also includes a troop or patrol inspection on gear and equipment including enough water, having fire building and weatherproof matches, weather report, duty rooster and camp site inspection. This is a great opportunity to tune up scout skills, camping skills, organizational skills, and leave no trace skills. Stay tuned for more detailed information. Seabase Preparation Last Monday two USCG Captains, Director or Marine Ops and Academic Dean at the Sea Education Association (www.sea.edu) , an education program that takes students out to sea, met with us to discuss going to sea. They volunteered their time to help prepare our scouts and I’m grateful for their expert help and preparation. We will need to spend more time in depth but the important thing is to get started. These skills apply to not only Seabase scouts but somewhat make up the safety and risk procedures for our troop and are important. Some key things are Ship, Shipmate and Self meaning - ship is our mission and our base, everyone takes care of that first, then its taking care of each other and finally take care of yourself in that order. We depend on the actions of others to stay safe and take on challenges. Scout do this all the time whether we are winter camping, climbing Mt. Washington, at Philmont or at Sea. Here’s what they covered.
We recorded this session and I’ll have more information on how to access it at the next meeting. The next couple meetings will be in preparation for the Klondike. Let’s “Be Prepared”. Troop 132 has a reputation to maintain in the district and let’s do our best. Remember to do your good turn daily! Mr. Duggan, Scoutmaster Greetings Scouts,
Fantastic job last weekend collecting trees. Well over 750 trees were collected, and I’m very proud of the feedback that I often receive. You were friendly, helpful, kind to each other and the many members of our community. Well done to you and your parents who helped in so many ways. Please thank Mrs. Sprague and Mr. Sprague for their leadership on the tree collection. Each year they and many others, too long to mention, do an outstanding job many months in advance to organize, arrange Trucks (thanks Mr. Coffey), train the troop, collect names, get and post signs (thanks Ms. Flinn); unloading trees (thanks Mrs. McLeod), account for the funds (thanks Mrs. Duggan) and route us to the right location (thanks Mr. Bjerke) ensure we did what we said we would and picking up stray trees; and for helping manage it all while learning the ropes (thanks Ms. Streeter-Tarlow)…again too many to thank. I also know the scouts jumped into action always eager to get trees, stack them and get more. You guys never tire and always willing to do more! This fundraiser enables us to raise money for gear, camp and senior scholarships, and helps our troop move ahead with the resources it needs to keep our programs running! Leadership Lucien led the PLC meeting last Monday night and planning for meetings and adjustments that are needed. Some informative meetings were planned for preparation for the Klondike Derby in February. Latest Eagle Congratulations to Henry who passed his Eagle Board of Review on Tuesday night with the Flintlock District. The board asked very challenging and introspective questions. These are not easy questions. An eagle candidate has to be prepared to review all their scouting history, merit badges, positions of responsibility, camping trips, advancements and eagle project. Being Prepared is key. Henry did a great job and this requires preparation. I’m sure he will tell us more and be sure to congratulate him next time you see him. Preparing for Seabase – open to all Troop and Parents Monday night, there is a Zoom meeting for Seabase participants, but all scouts and parents are welcome to attend. From 6:30-8:00pm, we will be meeting via Zoom, Captain Chris Nolan, Academic Dean of the Sea Education Association (SEA). Captain Nolan is a graduate of the US Coast Guard Academy, master mariner. www.sea.edu. SEA is a global teaching, learning and research community dedicated to the exploration, understanding and stewardship of marine and maritime environments. SEA empowers students with life-changing sea voyages of scientific and cultural discovery, academic rigor and personal growth. Captain Nolan has offered to provide some instruction for safety such as operating a VHF radio and other safety measures, dos / don’ts while sailing. Since this is Zoom the entire troop and parents are more than welcome to attend. Here are the details: Topic: Scouts Troop 132 - Sea Education Association Time: Jan 17, 2022 06:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) A copy of the Zoom meeting can now be found on the Troop Google Drive.
